Explanation of terms

  • In Place – Takes place on the same server. Typically, the simpler method, where the Exchange version is updated. It is similar to installing a cumulative update.

  • MoveMailBox / Swing / Legacy Migration – A more complex method, where a new Exchange server is installed alongside the old environment, and the mailboxes are migrated to the new server.
