Although update and upgrade are often used interchangeably, there is a difference on a technical level. Let us show you what the difference is. And also when an update is no longer enough and an upgrade becomes necessary!

We will also differentiate between software and hardware updates and upgrades.

Let’s start with software.

Software – Updates vs. upgrades

Updates – regular, small adjustments

  • Security updates help to close software gaps*

  • Improving performance
  • Relatively regular (monthly/weekly)
  • Free of charge (included in license)

  • Often automatically

Caution!

  • Software manufacturers specify a support period during which security updates are guaranteed. If this period ends, the software should no longer be used – an UPGRADE to a supported version is now mandatory!

Upgrades – rare, major changes

  • Major software leaps
  • New functions

  • New interface/design/UI
  • To be carried out manually

Caution!

  • It is essential to carry out extensive backups before an upgrade

  • Compatibility check:
-Hardware still sufficient for the new software?

-If OS gets an upgrade, check compatibility of other software

Hardware – Updates vs. upgrades

Hardware updates

  • Goal: Maintain the current function

  • Replace defective components with equivalent hardware (hard disks, RAM, fans)

Hardware upgrades

  • Objective: Performance or increase in efficiency.
In individual cases also to prevent breakdowns.
  • Replace components with “newer” or “better” components.
Possible factors include: Performance, Power Consumption, Improved Efficiency or Security
